Correspondence, MSS. of autobiography and journal (1834-37), telegrams, memoranda, legal documents, and clippings. Chiefly letters received, including those of Stephens' slaves, and dealing with plantation matters, philanthropy, and local affairs, as well as such sectional questions as slavery, Indian affairs, the Texas issue, territorial expansion, political parties (Whig, Know-Nothing, Democratic, and Republican), States' rights, Compromise of 1859, Kansas-Nebraska bill, Dredd Scott decision, secession, formation and operation of the Confederate Government, the Civil War and Reconstruction, campaign of 1876, transportation, the tariff, education, and other social, economic, literary, and political matters.
