  • "Statesman. Principally correspondence (chiefly 1814-52) plus drafts of Clay's 'despatches and instructions' as Secretary of State. The overwhelming subject of the collection is politics and the papers relate to nearly all phases of Clay's public career, including his service as commissioner at Ghent, his role in the presidential elections from the 1820s through the 1840s, and such subjects as the tariff, the United States Bank, slavery, public lands, and internal improvements. Correspondents include John Quincy Adams, Nicholas Biddle, Francis P. Blair, Francis Brooke, James Brown, Horace Greeley, William Henry Harrison, Christopher Hughes, the Marquis de Lafayette, John L. Lawrence, James Madison, James Monroe, Peter B. Porter, William B. Rochester, Richard Rush, John Sergeant, Thomas B. Stevenson, and Daniel Webster."
