- Originally published in 1669 under title: Lettres portugaises. Formerly attributed to Marianna Alcoforado.
- 270 copies printed. No. 168 of 250 offered for sale; signed by the artist.
- Illustrations: 22 full-page lithographs, comprising 15 printed in brown (portraying the supposed author of the Lettres) and 5 divisional titles plus front and back covers, printed in purple; numerous initials and decorations in the text, printed in purple. The volume was designed by Matisse and the illustrations printed by Mourlot frères.
- Artist's presentation copy, inscribed to Raymond Escholier; with an original pencil drawing, showing pentimento, of a woman's face.
- Issued unbound. Binding, by Gérard Charrière, 1974, of black morocco, with cut-outs, painted decorations and inlays of yellow morocco; original covers bound in. Enclosed in folder of quarter black morocco and slipcase. Accompanied by two maquettes for the binding, which was commissioned for the Spencer Collection.
