Note
  • Ms. of ten etched plates, hand-colored, illustrating 257 ancient glass gems.
  • Binder's title.
  • On fly-leaf beneath the name "Maria Callcott", she wrote "The plates were given to me in Rome in the year 1819- by the late Baron Wilhelm Bertholdy Mendelsohn of the family of the illustrious Moses Mendelsohn of the tribe of ---. He at that time was Consul general of Prussia & Ambassador from the Republic of San Marino. The materials for the work intended to accompany the plates were scattered at his death & are I fear irrecoverable. MC.-"
  • The identification of the Consul General from Prussia to Rome on the fly leaf is in error. Jacob Salomon-Bartholdy is, no doubt, the person to whom Mrs. Callcott was referring. In addition to being Consul General from Prussia at Rome, he was Honorary Citizen, and, Patrician of the Republic of San Marino. These plates probably were prepared for his unpublished manuscript entitled: Traité sur les verres colorés des anciens, and may be some, or all, of those engraved by F. Ruscheweyh after E. Ruspi. After Bartholdy's death in 1825, his estate passed to his sister Lea Salomon Mendelsohn. The ancient art in his collection was later purchased for the royal collection in Berlin. - Michaud, III, 191ff., Grove's Dictionary of musicians, V, 675; Neuer Nekrolog der Deutschen, III (1825), Heft 2, 852f.; Noack, F. • Bookplate of John Harris, a woodcut, signed: R S [i. e. Reynolds Stone]
