- Note
- "The manuscript transcribed for this edition consists of seven bound manuscript books containing two holograph drafts of the complete book; a small looseleaf notebook containing holograph notes, plans, and fragments relevant to the second draft; and two holograph pages found in the Monk's House papers ... Virginia Woolf did not number the pages of any of this material. Numbering that was done later shows the first draft to be 399 pages long ... the second 347 pages ... and the notebook 23 pages ... This constitutes the complete holograph material for The waves"--Pages 28-29 (1st group).
- The holograph drafts are located in the Henry W. and Albert A. Berg Collection, The New York Public Library, and form part of The Virginia Woolf collection of papers, http://archives.nypl.org/brg/19159. An additional 2 pages from the Monk's House papers, University of Sussex Library, are transcribed in Appendix A, pages 63-64 at end.
- Transcription is taken from 769 leaves of manuscript. Most have blank versos, which are not included; 48 leaves with writing on verso are counted twice in paging, for example "page 1," "page 1 verso."
