Contains transcription of a letter by Lear, dated Oct. 18, 1868, including an early illustrated ms. version of "The broom, the shovel, the poker, and the tongs," together with a facsimile of the letter ([2] sheets in pocket inside lower cover).
A later version of the song was published in Lear's Nonsense songs, stories, botany, and alphabets (London, 1871).
The original letter is now in Harvard University's Houghton Library.
