Included is a definition of bilingual education and the ideal for this type program, the number of people, and who they are, who do not have English as their native language, the major foreign languages being used in the U. S., the importance of bilingual education for all students, the extent of bilingual education in the U. S. today, some models for this type educational approach, the impact this program has made in the U. S. the availability and proficiency requirements of teachers, important reasons for bilingual programs and some answers to its critics, and the work and purpose of the Bilingual Education Service Center and the Cross Cultural Resource Center.
