- Summary
- Sterling Stuckey describes the anti-racist sentiment that responded to the racist doctrine of the "social Darwinism" theory, which claimed that Blacks were incapable of functioning in democratic institutions. Mr. Stuckey describes the post Civil War period as one in which white supremacy was supported by the failure of reconstruction. He analyzes, the attitudes of whites in both the North and the South, describes the treatment of Blacks, and discusses the change in attitudes at the turn of the century.
