- Summary
- Vincent Harding exposes the spiritual undercurrent which aided and abetted the active resistance of Blacks to enslavement - including the revolutionary messages shrouded in religion that revolt leaders such as Nat Turner and Denmark Vesey used. He discusses such hymns as Steal away in which the slaves secretly encouraged one another to quit the services of the master and either live a life of rebellion in the South or escape to the North.
