- Biography
- American ballet dancer with the American Ballet Theatre 1950-1973.Royes Emanuel Fernandez was born July 15, 1929, in New Orleans of a Spanish father and a French mother. His dance training began locally at age eight, and in the summer of 1945 he studied at the School of American Ballet in New York. Fernandez moved to New York in 1946, studying with Vincenzo Celli and dancing first with the Original Ballet Russe (de Basil) and then with the Markova-Dolin company. From 1950 to 1973 his primary affiliation was American Ballet Theatre: first as a soloist and then as a principal dancer. Fernandez continued to perform with other companies as a guest artist or as a member for brief periods of time. Among these was the New York City Ballet (1959-1960). Fernandez was considered by many the greatest American danseur noble to date, dancing the principal classical roles and partnering the foremost ballerinas of the time. After retiring from performing, he taught at the University of South Florida (1973-1974) and the State University of New York at Purchase (1974-1980).
