- Publ. in three vols. The volume-numbering is the device by which Shepard's distinguishes among the three reporters for the US Sup. Ct. from and to which the citators cite. Vol. 1 is the (official) United States Reports. Vols. 2 and 3 work on the other (commercial) reporters. Vol. 4 is a parallel citations vol. allowing the translation of a reporter-specific citation to another reporter. The 'edition' convention, is the device by which Shepard's acknowledges the irregular supesession of a complete set, beginning anew the series of base vols. which are in turn updated by supplementary pamphlets and bound vols.
- The case ed. shows citations by federal and state courts to opinions of the United States Supreme Court; the statute ed. shows citations by federal courts to the United States Constitution, statutes, treaties, and court rules.
