Summary
A collection of beadwork made by the Tembu of South Africa. The collection consists of an assortment of symbolic beadwork items worn by both male and female children, teenagers, brides or young woman, and middle-age and older adults. Collected in 1939, the collection is comprised of beaded belts, armlets, headbands, hair necklaces, collars and throatbands.

  • This small collection of beadwork from South Africa was given to Charles and Lola Szladits by art historian and collector Leo C. Collins. Mrs. Szladits surmises that the collection was formed as early as by 1939. Mr. Collins gave the collection to the Szladits to be donated to an appropriate institution. The collection was donated to the Schomburg Center in 1975.
