- Summary
- Views of theater actor Ira Aldridge. The collection includes half-length and full-length portraits of Aldridge both in and out of theatrical costume, as he was depicted in 19th century illustrations, prints, paintings and photographs. Theatrical roles depicted include Othello, King Lear, Shylock, Zanga in the Revenge, Aaron in Titus Andronicus and Mango in the Padlock. Also, half-length portrait views of Aldridge's wives, Margaret and Amanda, two daughters, two sons and one grandson; portrait views of people Aldridge met while touring-identified subjects include singer Jenny Lind, writer and critic Theophile Gautier, actor James Wallack, actress Annette Langenbaum, Olga, Catherine and Fyodor Tolstoy, Alexander Dumas, Mikhail Shchepkin, Ellen Tree and poet Taras Shevchenko. Also, views of Aldridge's home in London, gravesite in Lodz Poland, memorial chair in the Shakespere Memorial Theatre in England and a copy of a 1833 playbill announcing a performance; also views of the Aldridge statue by Pietro Calvi and of an exhibit in honor of Aldridge at the Chicago Public library in 1954.
