Summary
Views of scholar, diplomat and author Ralph J. Bunche, from the 1940s to the 1970s. Collection consists of quarter and half-length individual portraits of Bunche; group portraits of Bunche and his family; group portraits of Bunche with various officials, celebrities and academics; and views of Bunche attending lectures, public gatherings, and diplomatic events. Bunche is depicted with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the March to Montgomery; receiving the Spingarn Medal from Indian ambassador Vijaya L. Pandit (1949); with Prof. Walter G. Whitman; greeting Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion and United Nations Secretry-General Trygve Lie; with Sylvanus E. Olympio, West African Ewe tribesman; with Mary McLeod Bethune, Vijaya Pandit and President Harry Truman at an unidentified event; and attending a breakfast during an Elks Convention in Buffalo, New York, with Elks officials Hobson R. Renolds and J. Finley Wilson, and two Buffalo city officials. Bunche's wife, Ruth, is also depicted in individual and group portraits.
