Summary
Portraits of composer, musician and "Father of the Blues" W. C. Handy. Collection includes many individual portraits of Handy, at home, playing the piano and the trumpet, at his desk, with family members such as his daughters, Ruth, Lucille, his wives Elizabeth, Irma, his son Wyer as well as with grandchildren and great-grandchildren and other unidentified members at family gatherings and birthday celebrations. Group portraits of Handy also include Norman Bell, Dinah Shore, Paul Lavalle, Henry Levine, Frederick Bryan and orchestra, A.P. Kaufmann, Morton Gould, Rudolph Dunbar, William Pickens Jr., Edith Wilson, Roscoe Polin, Duke Ellington, Erskine Hawkins, Regenal Bean, Ethel Waters, Eva Jessye and Josh White. Handy is shown attending the funeral of his first wife, Elizabeth, at a banquet, broadcasting on NBC, at various social events and functions honoring him. Also views of his statue in Memphis, and of members of his family, Katherine, Wyer and Homer meeting with Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter at the White House.
