Summary

Views of Mary Cardwell Dawson, founder of the National Negro Opera Company taken approximately between 1940 and 1960, primarily in group portraits of opera functions, committee meetings or national opera conferences. Dawson is seen with Senator Fullbright, of Arkansas, Composer Clarence Cameron White, Minta Cato, Bertha Des Verney, N.Y. representative Carl Diton, Alphonse Cimbers, Dr. Omega King, Dr. Lawrence Pierre, stage director Silvia Haley and musical director Frederick Vajda. Collection also includes a full-length portrait of Ann Garnett-Greene, a dance soloist and choreographer for the National Negro Opera Company and a shot of Dawson conducting a performance at a local church in Harlem.
