Summary
Views of New York city mayor William O'Dwyer taken during the late 1940s. Collection consists of photos taken at city functions or at political events attended by O'Dwyer, mostly those involving the African-American community. Photos show O'Dwyer meeting with Harlem politicians, signing legislation approving Frederick Douglass Square, speaking at the YMCA, receiving Booker T. Washington Memorial half dollars, awarding police medals, receiving benefit checks, dedicating institutions, etc. Individuals identified in group portraits of O'Dwyer include Winthrop Rockefeller, Chick Solomon, Edith Alexander, Ray Jones, Glester Hinds, Mabel Roane, Thomas S. Harten, Herbert DeVarco, Gertrude Ayer, Noble Sissle, Elena Nikolaidi, Sylvia A. Sadkin, Sarah B. Jackson, Channing Tobias, Charles Buchanan and Samuel J. Battle. Half, three-quarter and full-length portraits are included.
