- The Schomburg Committee of the Trustees of The New York Public Library file consists of one folder of correspondence and meeting minutes kept by L. Hollingsworth Wood, a member of the committee, regarding the purchase of Arthur Schomburg's collection of books, pamphlets and prints by the New York Public Library and other related matters. There is correspondence dating to Ernestine Rose's initial letter in October 1925 to Wood advocating for the purchase of the collection by the Library, drafts of the Trustees' resolution pertaining to the purchase and composition of the Schomburg Committee, which served as an advisory committee to the NYPL Trustees.
- Other matters addressed in the correspondence include the acquisition of books and art work, efforts to keep Arthur Schomburg, who had been hired in 1932 to curate the Schomburg Collection, on the library payroll, as well as his research projects, 1926 trip to Seville and memorial in 1939. There are also some news clippings about the purchase of the Arthur A. Schomburg Collection of Negro Literature in 1926, as it was to be officially called. The correspondence is largely between Wood and Henry G. Leach, chairman of the committee; Franklin Hopper, Chief of Circulation of The New York Public Library; Charles S. Johnson, secretary of the committee; Dr. F. P. Keppel, director of the Carnegie Corporation; Ernestine Rose, Librarian of the 135th Street Branch; and Arthur A. Schomburg.

- L. Hollingsworth Wood, chairman of Board of Trustees of the National Urban League from 1915 to 1946, along with League staff members Charles S. Johnson and Eugene Kinckle Jones played pivotal roles in The New York Public Library's acquisition of Arthur A. Schomburg's collection of books, pamphlets, prints, photographs and manuscripts. Schomburg had initially offered his collection to the Urban League, but with neither staff nor facilities for the collection, Wood and others persuaded him to place his collection in the 135th Street Branch of The New York Public Library. The Library purchased the collection with funds from the Carnegie Corporation in 1926.
- Wood was appointed to the advisory committee that he had urged the Library to establish to provide guidelines for the Schomburg collection's expansion and promotion. Other members of the Advisory Committee of the Arthur A. Schomburg Collection included Henry G. Leach, editor of Forum Magazine and chairman of the committee; Mrs. Mary Brown, New York Public Library trustee; Eugene Kinckle Jones, secretary of the National Urban League; and Charles S. Johnson, editor of Opportunity Magazine and secretary of the advisory committee.
