Summary
The collection contains videotapes of meetings of Harlem business and community leaders with the following heads of state: Hugh Desmond Hoyte (Guyana), Justin M. Lekhanya (Lesotho), Joseph Saidu Mohmoh (Sierra Leone), Yoweri Museveni (Uganda), Ali Hassan Mwinyi (Tanzania), Denis Sassou N'Guesso (Congo), Pedro Verona Pires (Cape Verde) and Moussa Traore (Mali). Much of the footage represents official occasions such as welcoming ceremonies and luncheons, but there are also less formal discussions that range widely over cultural, economic, political, and social issues.

  • Between October 1979 and October 1989, visits by sixteen heads of state and government in Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, and the South Pacific Islands to the Harlem neighborhood of New York City were arranged by the Harlem Third World Trade Institute (The Institute) on behalf of its parent agency, the Harlem Urban Development Corporation (HUDC). The Institute was established by the HUDC in October 1979 as a forerunner to the Harlem International Trade Center Corporation (HITCC), and mandated to cultivate commercial ties between the United States and Third World nations in advance of the construction of the Harlem International Trade Center Complex. The Institute became a unit of the HITCC at the latter's inception in January 1988.
