- Summary
- Portraits of actor, singer and civil rights activist Paul Robeson. Collection includes images of Robeson singing in concert or for radio broadcasts, often accompanied by Lawrence Brown, and views of his audience; stills of films such as "Sanders of the River" with co-star Nina Mae McKinney, "Showboat", "Big Fella," and of theatrical productions: "Taboo," "Othello" with co-stars Uta Hagen and Jose Ferrer, "John Henry" with Alexander Gray; campaigning for W.E.B. Du Bois; picketing in civil rights demonstrations with Earl Robinson; at a restaurant with Clarence Muse and Lawrence Brown; in his football uniform at Rutgers; signing autographs; as well as several portraits of Robeson done by artists such as Betsy Graves and Winold Reiss. Individuals pictured with Robeson include Marian Anderson, Bill Robinson, Joe Louis, Olivia De Havilland, Mary Church Terrell, Larry Parks, Vincent Sheean, Robeson's wife Eslanda Goode Robeson and their son, Paul Jr. Full, half and quarter length portraits are included.
