- In 1816 a society of women was organized in Boston as Female Society for Missionary purposes; through their influence a group of men organized a refuge society which was incorporated Jan. 21, 1823 as: Penitent Female's Refuge. In 1824 the women's society became the auxiliary penitent female refuge society, working as an auxiliary to the Penitent Female's Refuge. In 1854 it was incorporated under the name of Bethesda Society, thus becoming legally independent but continuing the work in connection with the other society. This relation continued until 1914, when the Penitent Female's Refuge was merged into the Bethesda Society. The reports recorded in this entry cover the separate reports published by the Penitent Female's Refuge, the combined reports of the refuge and the Bethdesda Society, and the separate reports of the Bethesda Society.
- 1825 includes: Sermon delivered in Park Street Church before the Female's Refuge Society, Dec. 18, 1825.
