Local Note
The copy in the Manuscripts, Archives & Rare Book Division of the Schomburg Center is a gift, probably by A. A. Schomburg, added to the collection during Catherine A. Latimer & Arthur A. Schomburg's times as collection librarian & curator. The book is imperfect: treated, deacidified, with new all-rag end paper signatures, unbleached linen hinges, and cloth headbands; rebound in full mustard yellow cloth dyed to match the original, with some portions of the original binding pasted over the new; and has parts of the original dust jacket pasted on the recto & verso of an end leaflet. It is housed in a full cloth-bound folding box with a gilt leather title label at the spine. The book also contains an inscription in red ink from the author on the recto of one of the preliminary fly leaflets; it reads: "To Arthur Schomburg, a great scholar; a fine friend -- Zora Neale Hurston," It's also signed by the author: "Zora Neale Hurston" in red ink on the title page. This copy lacks NYPL's bookplate but has the NYPL perforated stamp and some of the processing markings of the original Schomburg Collection.
