Local Note
The Schomburg Center Manuscripts, Archives & Rare Book Division has two copies of this book. Copy 1 (accession no. G24034) is a gift presented by the publisher: "Harcourt, Brace and Company"; probably added to the Schomburg collection when Catherine A. Latimer was the collection librarian. It includes the autograph of the author in black ink on page [2] of the cover: "Arna Bontemps, New York, N.Y., April 18, 1931," NYPL's bookplate of Reference Collection of Negro Literature pasted on the recto of the first preliminary leaf, as well as various stamps like: "Division of Negro Literature and History;" Property of the City of New York;" and "The New York Public Library: Circulation Department, 135 Street Branch, 103 West 135th St." which indicate, this item was originally part of the 135 Street Branch's Circulation Department. It also features early processing marking of the original collection and NYPL's perforated stamp or seal. Imperfect: treated, deacidified, bound in full publisher's light brown cloth with black gilt illustration, no title on the front board, and black gilt lettering to the spine.
Copy 2 (accession no. D236155) is one of the items acquired or added to the Shomburg collection when Catherine A. Latimer was the collection librarian and Lawrence Reddick was the Curator. The book also features two NYPL bookplates of: "Arthur A. Schomburg Negro Collection," one on the cover page and the other on page one, as well as NYPL's perforated stamp and early processing marking of the original collection. Copy 2 is also bound in full publisher's light brown cloth with black gilt illustration, no title on the front board, and black gilt lettering to the spine, and has parts of the original dust jacket pasted on the recto of an end leaflet and page three of the cover. The book also contains an inscription in ink from the author on the first leaflet, which reads, "To Ruby and Owen, first and foremost, this first copy, Anna; 'I hope you will be able to put up with Little Augie. He was rowdy, and he [file] / [fell] into bad days. He needs your sympathy.'"
