  • An anthology conceived as a tribute and fund-raiser for Jim Lowell, whose Asphodel bookshop (established in 1963), in Cleveland, was closed by the police on December 1, 1966. Lowell was arrested, charged with distributing obscene literature (much of it by Cleveland poet D. A. Levy), and jailed. Levy turned himself in soon afterwards, and was arrested again a few months later, when the police confiscated his mimeograph machine and charged him with five counts of contributing to the delinquency of minors.
  • Levy and his friends produced numerous protest pamphlets, posters and flyers attacking the police during this period, along with this tribute, for which Levy helped solicit much of the material. A month before its publication Allen Ginsberg and The Fugs headlined a benefit for Levy and Lowell at the Case Institute of Technology’s Strosacker Auditorium.
  • In early 1968, after a long, drawn-out case, the prosecutor agreed to drop the obscenity charges against levy and Lowell, citing liberal Supreme Court rulings. In November of the same year Levy committed suicide at age 26.
