Summary
A television program that surveys the history of black sailors beginning with West African ships sent to the Americas 200 years before Columbus and covering black involvement in the whaling industry, the development of the seafaring Cape Verdean community in New Bedford, Mass., and black participation in the U.S. Navy and Merchant Marines during the Civil War, WWI, and WWII. Historical figures such as pirate El Mulatto, explorer Matthew Henson, and Marcus Garvey are touched upon and historical commentary is provided by historians Jim Farr and Melvin Hendrix, curator Richard Kugler and Joli Gonsalves, head of the Cape Verde Center.
