- Summary
- Posters manufactured during the 1980's (primarily 1988) by various organizations involved in the Brazilian anti-racism, anti-apartheid and pro-black women's movements. All Brazilian posters are in Portuguese. Among the organizations represented are: Movimento Negro; Núcleo Cultural Afro-Brasileiro; Movimento Artistico Cultural do Negro Brasileiro de Muriat; Centro de Formaçāo de Léderes Moquetá; Centro de Estudos e Defesa do No Negro do Parʻa. General themes include unity between indigenous peoples and blacks; condemnation of the murdering of black street children; promotion of cultural events (film, theater); publicizing of conferences and seminars (two re: black women); and educational material (poster calendars with Pan African data). Those manufactured in 1988- the 100th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Brazil - denounce the continuing oppression of black Brazilians and are representative of the massive campaign carried out thoughout the country in response to the government sponsored celebrations. Others represented are Curaçao (in papiamento) and Colombia (in Spanish) advertising conferences on blacks held in each country.
