- Summary
- In spite of the civil rights gains made during the 1960s many African Americans are still trapped in a life of poverty without opportunity. In an effort to understand the problems facing these black Americans, reporter Cheryl Alexander interviews two African American men of similar background, but from different generations: Charles Woods, now a successful upper middle class professional, and John Cunningham, a 17 year old high school senior, who hopes to be the first college graduate in his family and to move into the middle class. In addition to talking with the men, Alexander interviews family members as well as professionals concerned with this problem including: Douglas Glasgow, Gerald Jaynes, Fred Harris, James Comer, Reginald Wilson and Samuel Woodard. The second half of the program is a panel discussion by experts Joyce Ladner, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Walter Stafford, and moderated by Kenneth Walker about why some black Americans have been left behind in the move towards equality.
