Binding: Contemporary (ca. 1570-1580) white vellum, gilt, with tools à la fanfare, oak leaf tool and the intertwined initials H and 2 C's, interpreted as being the cipher of Queen Catherine de Médicis and her son Henry III, King of France; flaps with oak leaf tool; traces of ties. Cf. Les reliures à la fanfare / Geoffrey D. Hobson. 2. éd. p. 16, no. 54. Illustrated in: Die grossen Bibliophilien / G.A.E. Bogeng. v. 2, fig. 46.
Inscribed on 2 blank leaves bound in at beginning: "Bretonniere. 1578.265³. Bretom. C. Caviezel. Caviezel. Honrrado y no mas. 1578. Soubi vertueuse attante je conduis mon esperance. Caswiezel[?] Les Clotetz[?] Viue l'Amour. Viue ma maistresse et moy." Second inscribed leaf has also 2 occurences of a cipher of 2 intertwined C's, one occurence of a cipher of 2 C's joined to 2 ringed I's (resembling Greek letter phi) and 19 occurences of the sign "S fermé" (cf. Hobson, p. 85-119); similar ciphers used on bindings of Philippe de Mornay, seigneur du Plessis-Marly (cf. Manuel de l'amateur de reliures amoriées françaises, pl. 705).
