Summary
Views of the Boston Commons: view from the state house, statue of Webster and Mann in the foreground; Beacon St. Mall including benches, trees, stone-lined gutter, men with cart; Charles St. Mall with pedestrians pausing for the camera; Tremont St. Mall; gates to the Common: Park St. entrance woman entering on a snowy day, horses with sleds full of snow entering West St., man in tophat near gate on a snowy day, views of a stone gate; paths in the common, overhung with trees, some with pedestrians, some showing snow scenes, one view showing a dog on a path near the pond; the old elm (blown down 1876), one view in winter; Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument (designed by Martin Milmore): people standing behind wood barrier, chairs set up at base crowd looking at monument, garlands draped from it, view through the trees from Beacon St., from Tremont St., detail of bas relief at base of monument; Brewer's fountain (copy of a fountain by Lienard): some views showing it running, some not, people posing in front of it; Frog Pond, including the fountain; the state house dome from the commons; apple woman wearing ruffled cap, showing table and baskets; men selling apples, lemonade, one with civil war style army cap, sign on tree reads "patronize disabled soldier"; view of constable and small guard house; view of a balloon ascension. Some views duplicated.
