- Views made by the various photographers on the Powell's surveys of the Colorado River and other parts of the canyon regions. Includes views by E. O. Beaman, J. Fennemore, and J. K. Hillers, with Hillers views making up the majority.
- Views are broken into series including "Views on the Green River," "Views on the Colorado River," with "Glen Canon," "Marble Canon," "Cataract Canon," and "Grand Canyon" sub-series', "Views on the Rio Virgen," "Views on Kanab Creek," "Views on the Sevier River," "Views on Green River," "Views on Vermillion Creek," and "Indians of the Colorado Valley."
- Most views have letterpress labels reading "U.S. Topographical and Geological Survey of the Colorado River of the West by J. W. Powell and A. H. Thompson" on the recto of the mounts from which the title is taken and letterpress labels with series' titles and captions affixed to verso of mounts. Some views have plain labels giving only caption information. Some view published by Wm. B. Holmes of New York, some have J. F. Jarvis labels on verso. Some of the views have manuscript annotations by an expedition member, F. S. Dellenbaugh, including annotations correcting or amending the printed labels. Some views are initialled by A. H. Thompson. Some views were formerly owned by V. H. Campbell.
