Note

Consists of 6 bifolia of letterpress and 5 prints. Each bifolium but the first contains, on verso of first leaf, a letter from Gustave Flaubert to Louise Colet and, in lieu of her reply (Colet's side of the correspondence having been destroyed by Flaubert's niece), an appropriate "response" devised by Charles Hobson by selecting passages from the 1984 novel: Flaubert's parrot / by Julian Barnes. Laid into each of these bifolia is a print; second leaf of each is blank, not counted in collation.
Flaubert's letters are selected from: Letters of Gustave Flaubert, 1830-1857 / translated by Francis Steegmuller. 1980.
Illustrations: 5 prints : monotype, col. ; full-page. "The artist made the monotypes ... working with lithographic inks on plexiglass plates. He made twenty-five monotypes on each of the five themes of the portfolio from which eighteen monotypes were collated in portfolio sets and hand-embellished with pastel"--P. [3]. Each print inscribed with a legend, numbered and signed in pencil.
Issued unbound, in dark blue solander case by Klaus Rotzscher (i.e. Klaus-Ullrich S. Rötzscher).
