- This is a moving portrait of African-American family life in 1930s Kansas, following young Sandy Rogers as he comes of age. Sandy's mother, Annjee, works as a housekeeper for a rich white family, while his father traverses the country in search of work.

- The Schomburg Center's Manuscripts, Archives & Rare Book Division's copy is a gift added or transferred to the Schomburg collection during Catherine A. Latimer's tenure as collection librarian. It's originally part of the 135 Street Branch, Circulation Department, and it includes various ink stamps of: "Division of Negro Literature and History;" Property of the City of New York" and "The New York Public Library: Circulation Department, 135 Street Branch, 103 West 135th St." It also contains a 1940 onward NYPL's bookplate of "The Schomburg Collection of Negro Literature and History," early processing markings of the original Schomburg Collection and perforated stamps or seals. Inscribed in black ink by the author: "Sincerely Langston Hughes, New York, March 31, 1931." The book is imperfect: treated, deacidified, and re-bound in black cloth over boards, library binding, and a gilt spine.Library has autographed copy.
