- Local Note
- The copy in the Manuscripts, Archives & Rare Book Division of the Schomburg Center is a gift by A. A. Schomburg in 1931 during Catherine A. Latimer's tenure as collection librarian. It includes two handwritten inscriptions on the recto of the first preliminary leaflet, which reads: 'To "Schom" from "Locke" July 4, 1931' and "To the Schomburg Collection another link in the creation and development of Negro Literature." This copy also includes Claude McKay's autograph on a portion of possibly the original dust jacket pasted on the verso of the original paperback cover. The book bears the NYPL bookplate of Arthur A. Schomburg Negro Collection on the recto of the first preliminary leaflet, NYPL's perforated stamp or seal, and early processing marking of the original collection. The book is imperfect: treated, deacidified, and library-bound in navy cloth over boards with the original soft printed wrappers and a gilt spine. It also has an "Apr. 29, 1932" bounding date ink stamp on page [3] of the cover. G.K. Hall's entry for this item includes a printing date of "August 4, 1932, which indicates that this item may have been re-cataloged during Arthur A. Schomburg's tenure as curator.
