  • Illustrations: 29 prints from 28 plates : drypoint, engraving, b&w ; full-page (plate mark 47 x 32 cm.). Comprise frontispiece with title "Details from Nancy's garden," 27 prints chiefly based on engravings in Thornton's work and the accompanying print (2nd state of frontispiece). "They are drawn with nails, scrapers, sandpaper, wire brushes, and the Dremel electric rotary tool. In some cases I've also thrown them, face down, across the limestone floor of the Atelier Crommelynck to get tone on the plate. Twenty-four ... were drawn from engravings in the folio Temple of Flora ... Three ... were drawn from living plants"--Statement by the artist, p. [8]; D'Oench & Feinberg state that the latter 3 were based on botanical ill. reproduced in The Discovery of nature (London : Eyre & Hobhouse, c1983). Proofed by Aldo Crommelynck, Paris, and printed by R.E. Townsend, Inc., Georgetown, Mass.
  • Each print, except the last 2 of 3 depicting varieties of "Passionflowers," is preceded by 2 p. of letterpress with botanical description and a relevant poem by a modern American poet; letterpress to "Powder-puff tree" includes 2 poems. "Like Thornton, we would accompany each flower with a tribute from the pen of a poet ... For the more obscure specimens depicted by Dine, we have commissioned contemporary poets to write with oblique or direct reference to those flowers"--Editors' pref., p. [6].
