Note
  • Title page printed in black and red.
  • Translation of Factorum et dictorum memorabilium libri IX, with additions and commentary, begun (ca. 1377) by Simon de Hesdin and completed (1401) by Nicolas de Gonesse. Cf. leaves o5v, 2F6r.
  • Based on the ed. published by Antoine Vérard (Paris, 1499 or 1500). Cf. Moreau.
  • Moreau gives date of publication as ca. 1524 on the basis of the t.p. border and printer's mark. Philippe Le Noir was active 1522-1544. Cf. Renouard, P. Répertoire des imprimeurs parisiens. 1965. p. 266-267.
  • Signatures: a-z⁶ [et]⁴ A-X⁶ 2A-2F⁶.
  • Illustrations: 10 prints : woodcut ; full-page (2) or smaller. On leaves a1v, h6r, o6r, t6r, [et]3r, A1r, E5v, I3r, O2r, V1v. Cut on leaf h6r repeated from Le Noir's ed. of Pierre Gringoire's Le blazon des héretiques (1524); signed with a monogram (GS surmounted by a cross of Lorraine) interpreted by A. Bernard as that of Geoffroy Tory (cf. Geofroy Tory / par Auguste Bernard. 2. éd. 1865. p. 241-242), but attribution is disputed by Nagler (Monogrammisten, III, 341) and refuted by A. Ohl des Marais (article in Byblis, v. 10 (1931), p. 139-[144]), who identifies the monogram as that of Gabriel Salmon. Cf. also BN. Fonds français. Graveurs du seizième siècle, II, p. 93, no. 5. Most other cuts in another hand.
  • Ornaments: 2 prints : woodcut ; full-page. Signed with the cross of Lorraine; ascribed to Geoffroy Tory by Bernard and others, but the mark is interpreted by Ohl des Marais (article in Byblis, v. 10, p. 13-[17]) as that of Jacquemin Woeiriot, who cut some of Tory's designs. Comprise border on t.p., incorporating Le Noir's monogram, and printer's device on leaf 2F6v. For t.p. border, cf. Ohl des Marais, p. 16; reproduced (plate V, fig. A) as t.p. border for Le Noir's ed. of Ovid's Metamorphoses (1523). Cf. also Bernard, p. 238-239 (who states that the cut, used repeatedly by Le Noir, is a copy of a cut by Urs Graf (1519)); Renouard. Marques typographiques parisiennes, 625. Subject: Death of Pyramus and Thisbe, Judgment of Paris, etc. For device, cf. Bernard, p. 353-354; Renouard. Marques typographiques parisiennes, 623; Silvestre. Marques typographiques, 61. -- Numerous floriated and criblé initials.
