Summary
The African American Institute Photograph Collection documents AAI sponsored programs and events. Program photographs consist of group portraits, students at work, students interacting with AAI administration, and students in informal classroom dicusssions. One photograph pictures a student with his host family. Educational host institutions represented include Catholic University, Colorado College, State University of Buffalo, Southern Illinois University, Ithaca College, and Rutgers University. Vocational training photographs show students working as as architectural and sanitary engineers, record keepers, construction site readers, sound recorders, and scientific researchers. Amongst training hosts represented are New York City Transit Authority, New York City Department of Personnel, New York City Department of Hospitals and Public Works, New York State Department of Public Works, the Northeast Region - Office of Economic Opportunity, Con Edison, and Radio Corporation of America (RCA).

  • The African American Institute (AAI) was founded in New York City (1953) as a private non-profit organization to assist African development and strengthen African-American communication. AAI supports programs in education, technical training, and communication. Programs have included the African Policy Information Center, African art exhibitions, African graduate fellowships, the Women's African Committee, and African travel. The AAI is headquartered in New York City and maintains a smaller office in Washington, D.C. AAI has representatives in approximately twenty African countries and Portugal.
