- Biography
- Hiram Rhoades Revels, clergyman, politician, and college president, was the first African American to serve on the United States Senate. After serving as a church pastor before the Civil War, and helping to organize black military regiments during the war, Revels briefly served in Mississippi local and state politics, from 1868-1870, before he was elected, in 1870, by the state legislature to the U.S. Senate to complete the unexpired term of Jefferson Davis. In 1871, he became the first president of Alcorn College, a black school in Claiborne County, Mississippi, serving from 1871-1873, and again from 1876-1882. Revels and his wife, Pheobe, had six daughters including Suzie, who later married journalist Horace Roscoe Cayton.
