- Summary
- The Paul Robeson Photograph Collection gives a glimpse of his personal life and captures a few of his civil rights activities. Personal photographs include portraits of Robeson during his mid-life and later years (1930-1960), and several portraits of Paul Robeson Jr. during his youth. The bulk of general photographs document the third annual convention of the National Negro Labor Council, Chicago Ill. (1953). Images capture delegations from across the nation, convention speakers, and signs with slogans that emphasize the Conference's issues. Additional collection photographs document civil rights demonstrations and protest activities. The collection includes a few unidentified photographs that may relate to Robeson's career as a performer. The Collection does not include images of Robeson's early years and family life (except for Paul Robeson Jr.). Absent are images that adequately represent the numerous civil rights activities in which Robeson participated and images that document his concert and stage career.
