- Summary
- The collection consists of letters received, 1821-1848, from Silas Wright, Jr., Michael Hoffman, John A. Dix, R.H. Walworth, W.L. Marcy, Albert Gallatin, Preston King, and others concerning national and local political and economic issues as well as some letters from Flagg to his associates, his notes on periodical articles, and a small amount of printed material. Correspondence documents political and economic issues, both national and local, of the period from 1823 to 1848, covering topics such as free trade, public debt, construction of canal systems in New York, currency and banking, presidential campaigns, taxation, extension of slavery and states rights, and annexation of Texas. Letters also trace the collapse of the National Republican Party, the new Whig Party, the rise of the Democratic wing of the Republican Party, and the development of Jacksonian democracy.

- Biography
- Azariah Cutting Flagg (1790-1873) was a newspaper editor and politician in New York. He served as assemblyman in 1823; New York Secretary of State from 1826 to 1833; State Comptroller, 1834-1839, 1842-1846; and New York City Comptroller, 1852-1859.
