- This convention was one in a series of annual, and then less frequent, conventions organized by free blacks in the United States between 1830 and 1861. Cf. Bell, H. A survey of the Negro convention movement, 1830-1861 (New York, 1969). The names applied to these Conventions varied, especially during the 1840s and 50s when the meetings were less regular.
- "For the purpose of improving the character, developing the intelligence, maintaining the rights, and organizing a union of the colored people of the free states, the national convention does hereby ordain and institute the 'National Council of the Colored People.'"--pages 18-19.
