Summary
  • The New York Urban League Records (NYUL) consist of materials documenting the activities of the board and its committees, League problems, and the National Urban League. Files contain correspondence, minutes, memoranda, subject files, news clippings, printed matter, and financial records.
  • A number of special activities are represented in the collection among them the Frederick Douglas Awards Dinner which was started in 1966 to honor New Yorkers who "...have made distinguished contributions toward equal opportunity. " This event was organized annually by the League's Secretary, Ann Kheel (1966-1990). Records can also be found for the programs Operation Open City (sought to create equality of opportunity for New York City residents to live in neighborhoods of their own choosing by ending discriminatory practices of landlords and real estate agents); Skills Advancements, Inc. (a job skills training program); the Street Academy (an alternative mode of education which provided dropouts with individual training, guidance, remedial help and motivational support to complete high school, with many entering college), and two issues of the newspaper Forty Acres and a Mule (Harlem's first student newspaper, written, edited and published by the Street Academy participants).
  • The collection also includes NYUL's annual reports, various histories of the League, many news clippings about its programs and activities, speeches given by its officers, a photograph album documenting the 25th anniversary of the Frederick Douglass Awards Dinner (1990), and related files.
