The Berg Collection holds two copies. Copy 1 was formerly owned by Shirley Burden and has "S.C. Burden, 1953" in pen on the front flyleaf. Copy 2 was formerly owned by Ben and Bernarda Shahn.

Berg Collection copy 2 inscribed to Ben Shahn by Edwin Rosskam on half-title: "To Ben Shahn, whose indirect Leica produced some of the most direct pictures in this book."

Berg Collection copy 2 with bookplate: "From the Library of Ben Shahn and Bernarda Bryson Shahn."

Berg Collection copy 2 includes a manuscript annotation to Rosskam's afterword supplying the names of three photographers -- Ted Jung, Peter Sekaer, and Esther Bubbly -- not included by Rosskam. Annotation presumably added by one of the Shahns.
