Summary
  • At a conference of the National Committee for Rural Schools, citations are awarded to individuals who have made notable contributions to civil rights. Dr. Kenneth Clark pays tribute to Ben McLaurin and the support he has given to the Committee and James Thornton speaks about housing, the 14th Amendment, and the discrimination still existing in Federal housing programs. Thornton presents a citation to the first honoree, James Scheuer, who speaks on the question of White men being educable in regard to housing integration and civil rights progress. Following, are [Iva Newgan] and [Lema Reese] performing a selection of music. Howard N. Meyer presents the next citation to Reverend L. T. Smith who speaks about setting politics in motion in Mississippi, motivating Blacks to register to vote, and states some harsh facts of what it will take to achieve democracy in America.
  • Doris Derby, a supporter of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, reports on her work in Georgia and the injustices against Blacks who attempt to register to vote, organize themselves or become politically involved. Nelson Jack Edwards is awarded a citation by Martin Gerber for his work in the trade-union movement and leadership in civil rights in Detroit. Edwards talks about the discriminatory practices of the Knights of Labor trade-union and the formation of the AFL in 1890.
