- Summary
- At the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters Eastern and Detroit-Pittsburgh Zones regional conference, Ben McLaurin leads the singing of Hold the Fort followed by an invocation by O. W. Barnum. George Slade, president of the Washington Division gives a brief welcoming speech emphasizing the need to make the conference a success in light of the depressed railroad times. Adolph Payne, chairman of the C & O Railroad speaks briefly followed by Ben McLaurin who talks about retired members and their need for a special program. He mentions how President Kennedy and Vice-president Johnson have worked together so well for civil rights and fair employment. Brother Paron of the international executive board of Canada, talks about the railroad workers rights and working conditions in Canada, their aspirations, the railroad companies wanting to eradicate passenger service and jobs already being furloughed. Bennie Smith, second international vice-president, speaks about the old days of the porters, the formation of the Brotherhood and asks for continued support from the Ladies Auxiliary.
