Summary
T. D. McNeal, fourth international vice-president of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, speaks at the 1957 New Orleans Division conference on the revision of the contract of 1937 with the Pullman Company. He discusses the original agreement and mentions the improved wages, hours, runs, employees' rights, job security, and increased pension since that time. McNeal states new proposals to be presented to the Pullman Company for revision of the agreement and talks about the commitment required of workers to win these agreements and to maintain continued growth of the Brotherhood. A. P. Randolph, the president, speaks on the Brotherhood's beginnings and the Pullman Company's intention to dominate the mind and spirit of the porter and to discourage their organizing and unionizing. He explains how only the men's strength in unity and complete organization enabled them to fight for better working conditions, and brought them out of their status as indentured servants.
