- Originally issued in 3 series (London : Bentley, 1840-1847). The present ed. is a selection of tales, chiefly in verse, from the 1st and 2nd series.
- Illustrations: 7 prints : lithograph ; full-page. Comprise added t.p. (from the 2nd series) and 6 ill., being copies of the original etchings after R.H. Dalton Barham (the author's son), George Cruikshank and John Leech, re-engraved by A. Kollner and lithographed by P.S. Duval.
- "The antiquary ... taking a pinch of snuff, continued his harangue" (The spectre of Tappington): p. 19. "A bunch of abominations, called a cigar, reeked ...": (The spectre of Tappington): p. 30. "Here he took some rappee" (The black mousquetaire): p. 135. Other brief references to tobacco.
