  • Illustrations: 157 prints from 156 blocks : wood engraving ; image chiefly 5 x 7 cm. Some sources attribute all to Alexander Anderson; however Pomeroy (cited below) assigns only 54 to him. See Pomeroy for discussion and detailed description of the Anderson cuts. Based in part on the illustrations for the original Latin-German edition attributed to Paul Kreutzberger. Twenty-four figures illustrating an alphabet of animal sounds are printed from 2 blocks; the remaining illustrations are numbered I-CLIV (CX repeated in numbering; illustration no. I repeated as no. CLIV). Both the animal sounds blocks and the repeated cut are attributed to Anderson by Pomeroy.
  • The Latin-English version of Charles Hoole was originally issued London, 1659; amended by J.H. for the 11th London edition, 1728, and by William Jones for the 12th London editiion, 1777, on which the present edition is based. See "To the editor of the twelfth edition..." (pages 3-4), signed "W. Jones, Pluckley," and "An advertisement concerning the 11th edition" (pages 5-6), signed "J.H., London, July 1727."
  • Includes prefaces by the author (pages 7-11) and the translator (pages 12-16).
