- Leaf [1], which was the t.p. in the original ed., here lacks title and imprint; title from ill. on leaf [1]. Proof copy or other variant of the 2nd ed. (1856), which was issued in illustrated paper covers with cover title: A book of nonsense / by Derry Down Derry.
- Consists of illustrated limericks; lithographed throughout, from new stones made for this edition by the author/artist. Cf. Ray.
- In this ed., the limericks are printed in 5 lines; in the original edition (London : Published by Thos. McLean, Feb. 10, 1846), they were chiefly printed in 3 lines.
- In this issue, the 2 limericks beginning "There was an old man of the West" are each with the appropriate ill.; other variants as cited for this ed. by W.B.O. Field in Edward Lear on my shelves, 1933, p. 131-132, but leaves not in order described for the earlier ed.
- On several leaves the text has been retouched on the stone.
- Ill. on leaves [24], [52], [57], [60], [66] and [72] depict pipe-smoking men.
