Following introductory remarks about her career as choreographer for ballet and musical comedy and as a writer, Miss de Mille discusses the status of the arts and of the artist in contemporary American society as compared with European countries; how the large foundations allot their contributions to various fields; the reliance of American dance companies on private support; the attitude of the American public and the legislator toward the performing arts; the theatrical craft unions and the financial effects of their work rules; the essential nature of the theatre; the Tyrone Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis; attitudes and the place of the theatre in society.
