- Walter Terry introduces Melissa Hayden; Hayden speaks with Terry about her early dance training and her decision to become a dancer, including the influence of her contact with [Walter K.] De Basil's Ballet Russe company; moving to New York City to pursue her dance studies; her first professional job, in the corps de ballet at Radio City Music Hall and why it was such a good experience; the circumstances of her joining Ballet Theatre [later American Ballet Theatre]; her roles at Ballet Theatre including in Jerome Robbins' Interplay; joining the New York City Ballet in its first year; her roles with the New York City Ballet including Robbins' The cage; dramatic roles compared with bravura roles; the subscription audience and newcomers; her plans for teaching and coaching upon retirement from performing.
